Lonely Planet Review
As long as you don't expect anything fancy, you'll be happy at Hana's only nod to the budget traveller. The BBQ and shared kitchen offer great opportunities to exchange travel tips with fellow guests at the end of the day.
Joe's down-home appeal is best suited for active people who want a simple place to return to after a day of exploring. The linoleum is well-worn and the carpets hail back to another era, but there's a fresh coat of paint on the walls and the place is kept spanking clean. The dozen guest rooms are straightforward, little more than a pair of beds and an end table, though some have private baths. The friendly manager is a wealth of knowledge on the area - ask him to show you the article on Joe's that appeared in, of all places, the Wall Street Journal. The location is handy, just across the road from the ocean and within walking distance of the town's main beach.

Author Tip
Hike the coastal trail that starts just up the road at Kainalimu Bay and leads 4km (2.5mi) to the beautiful black-sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park. Along the way you'll pass blowholes, ancient ruins and rocky points where seabirds roost. You might even spot a Hawaiian monk seal basking in the sun.
