Since so much of Caracas life revolves around shopping centres, it figures that a hotel should be part of one. Housed in the chic mall of the same name, this has the feel of some of the city's top-flight luxury hotels for considerably less, and prices drop further on weekends.

Even for those not inclined to hang around malls, this one contains dozens of great restaurants as well as Caracas' edgiest cultural complex, the Centro Cultural Trasnocho, which has an art cinema, theatre and after-show lounge. Check-in is on the mall's ground level, where smartly dressed reception staff set things up as hotel occupants discuss their purchases or browse the newspaper in the semiformal lobby. English-speaking bellmen in tight red suits lead you to your sleek, softly lit room or suite, featuring white wicker furniture on polished wood floors amid attractively subdued decor. Suites have an additional room with wraparound sofa. Views take in the ample sundeck and small pool and the modern cityscape beyond. It's worth getting the breakfast plan for a terrific buffet spread in the hotel's restaurant.
