A beautiful setting a few miles north of town overlooking the Crosby Channel, the Royal is a handsome hotel with gorgeous rooms, some of which have elegant four-poster beds. If you're planning a trip to Aintree for the Grand National or want to base yourself away from the madding crowds of the city centre, the Royal might just be your best bet. This hotel is an old-fashioned spot with big, spacious rooms decorated in that gloriously chintzy style so beloved of Britain down the years. Thick, flower-patterned bedspreads match the floral wallpaper, the paintings of British flora and, yes, the vague floral patterns in the thick carpets. Only the superior rooms come with a whirlpool bath, Mira electric shower (with all its fab settings) and a four-poster bed, but all are spotlessly clean and tidy. The Marine View restaurant is good but not quite as good as the marine view; the short walk down to the Waterloo pier is a romantic little stroll that just adds to the overall atmosphere.

It's the first weekend in April, so the country's attention is focused on Aintree just up the road, where the 40-odd stalwarts of the jumps get ready for the nation's favourite race, the Grand National. If you're here at another time of year, the Grand National museum is still worth visiting.
