Lonely Planet review

This four-star landmark hotel vaguely shaped like a ship has a terrific location on the waterfront with great views of the Three Graces and the Mersey. The rooms are spacious and decorated in a slightly old-fashioned business style.

There was a time when the Thistle was top of the heap of the city's business hotels - a huge, 226-room place that catered to all kinds of execs zipping in and out of town on all manner of exciting business. Ah, the good old days. The hotel scene has been substantially transformed in recent years but still the Thistle thrives, perhaps not the favoured destination of the high-end business crowd but still popular with all kinds of leisure and work travellers. The rooms are big and the views - especially from floor 9 to 12 - are sensational. The decor is a tad outdated and the bathrooms are far from the pleasure palaces you might find in other top end hotels, but the service is terrific and the friendliness all-encompassing.
