Lonely Planet review

If not for the bunks, backpacks and snoring strangers here, you might forget you're in a hostel! Taking a formerly derelict building seriously upmarket, Mr Big has snazzy communal areas (big screens, suede couches), great kitchens, en suite private rooms, clean shared bathrooms for the dorms and a cool rooftop terrace. As with most of the hostels around Central Station (there are a helluva lot of them), Big Hostel's main selling point is its proximity to the city's key sights and nocturnal delights. But because Big Hostel is on the Surry Hills side of the tracks (literally), you'll also be able to succumb to the suburb's myriad culinary and alcoholic temptations without having to walk too far. Or if you'd just rather hang at the hostel, all the rooms have TVs and free wi-fi access. Elizabeth St's seamy lower hollows aren't Sydney's most salubrious spaces, but there's good security here, and Central Station is just across the road so you won't have to lug your bags too far in the dark.
