Since the Aryo Barzan opened in 2003 it has become a favourite among readers. We've had numerous emails hailing the intelligent, smiling service, eminently fair prices and comfortable rooms. Located right in the centre of town, it's an excellent upper mid-range choice. You can feel that this place is a cut above most of its mid-range contemporaries from the moment you walk into the stylish lobby. The cafe and coffeenet (internet cafe) have a subtle sophistication, and so do the smartly groomed and extravagantly coiffed reception staff. Upstairs the 50 tastefully furnished rooms are set around an atrium. They will never be mistaken for being bozorg (big), but they are comfortable enough. Unless, that is, you decide to get into the bathtubs squeezed into most rooms. These are big enough to accommodate most of Mini Me or about half of a garden-variety human. The Aryo seems to be busy throughout much of the year, so it's well worth booking ahead.

Within easy walking or taxi of just about everywhere, you can pretty much choose whatever experience you like. But in the evenings, this one is hard to beat: make sure you're at the Hafez Mausoleum just after sunset, when it's busy with Iranian pilgrims and the sky turns a brilliant royal blue. After hanging out here, walk down to Ghaem Sq for a meal in the classically Iranian Yavar Restaurant.
