Ensconced in a lush enclave at the base of the Parque Nacional El Ávila, this grand old hotel highlights what's great about Caracas. Erected by Nelson Rockefeller in the 1940s, it's a throwback to a less traffic-choked age. Perhaps mellowed by the setting, the Ávila's staff is also noticeably more cordial than staff elsewhere. You enter through a stand of tropical foliage, with parakeets and macaws swooping amongst the palms and mangoes. At the rear of this little forest, the hotel's two ivory wings unfold against Ávila's verdant peaks. All rooms have balconies, commanding views of either the cityscape below or the towering Ávila range above. There's no air-con but at these cool heights the ceiling fans are more than adequate, and you'll be lulled to sleep by the chorus of tree frogs. Wicker furniture and old-fashioned flowery bedspreads contribute to an old-plantation feel. Simple bathrooms, most with tubs, have black floor tiles and gold sink fittings. Beyond the airy lobby, a dining room opens onto a rear deck with a bar and an aquamarine pool that's shaded by almond trees and stands of bamboo. A huge buffet breakfast is served daily here in this delightful setting.

You can glimpse the cable cars going up and down the mountain from here and in fact it's just a quick taxi ride or 20 minute walk to the teleférico (cable car) station. Otherwise, hike down through the lushly shaded San Bernardino neighbourhood to the Quinta de Anauco, a lovely 18th-century estate that contains the Museum of Colonial Art and on weekends hosts chamber-music recitals.
