This is a Peace Corps favourite, which tells us two things - it's good value, and it's packed full of home-based comforts. When these folks come out of the hills, they head for the best.Rooms are on the small side, but they only feel cramped because they've jammed good-sized beds, a chest of drawers and a big TV into each. The showers are gas-heated, so are (mostly) blasting hot - although you do want to get in early, as those volunteers take full advantage. The hotel is a little way out of the centre, but the atmosphere more than makes up for the walk. Scattered around the place are some very quirky decorations - everything from driftwood to antique sewing machines. There's a miniature kitchen for guests to use and a sweet little upstairs patio.

It's a short walk to the Hotel Santo Domingo, whose ivy-covered grounds hold a fascinating collection of museums, workshops, art galleries and subterranean crypts. Once you've stocked up on culture you can pop into El Muro pub, one of the most laid-back drinking spots in town.
