A true hallmark of Texas luxury - La Cantera is at once rugged and refined. The resort must be trying to break the world record for most hospitality awards ever. Condé Nast Traveler, Golf Digest, AAA Four Diamond are among those that have recognized the destination property.

A fragrant evergreen scent wafts from one of the many native Texan plants surrounding the five curvaceous limestone pools. The adult-only hot pool overlooks the carved out, mesquite-studded landscape below. Built on the site of an abandoned quarry, landscape architects used the remaining large stones well. Limestone archways frame the view and become a backdrop for wedding ceremonies. Larger boulders have become hazards on the two championship golf courses. If you're splurging this much, you might as well spring for a deluxe room so you get a balcony. The traditional rooms are on the petite side. For more privacy, choose a villa suite in one of the outlying casitas (small houses). Francesca's restaurant in the main hotel has a 180° view of the rolling Hill Country. Their high-end dishes pack a southwestern punch - try a chilli-rubbed filet, or grilled lobster with a chorizo sausage side sauce.
