Condesa's hottest new option is just north of the wonderful Parque México. With just 16 rooms, it's a smaller, more businesslike affair than the neighborhood's other high-end boutique hotel and features a similarly low-key restaurant with menus designed by guest chefs.American owner Tom Shortt had Manhattan's Mercer hotel in mind when he converted the Edificio Tehuacán, one of Condesa's many art deco gems, into a sleek boutique hotel. A skip and a jump from the lush, seriously strollable park, the 1930s structure boasts a classic deco façade with floral bas-reliefs between narrow glass panels. Collaborating with contemporary Mexican designer Nahim Dagdug, Shortt restored the interior to a modern Mexican aesthetic, using hardwoods and earthy hues. Original art complements the stylish furniture, all designed in-house. Guests roll off their 300-thread-count sheets and step onto shag rugs that are inset into marble floors over several layers of padding. Extras include iPod hookups and flat-screen TVs. The highly acclaimed ground-level restaurant, the Hip Kitchen, serves an exciting array of Mexican-Asian fusion cuisine in a low-lit, romantic space.
