Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The independently owned Penn's View Hotel is an old-fashioned inn overlooking a freeway and the Delaware River. Rooms feature Chippendale-style furniture, and many rooms have exposed-brick walls and fireplace. You must investigate the wine bar. For many, this exceedingly well-stocked bar and the hotel's convenient access to Old City are the big draws.

This beautiful old hotel overlooks the Delaware River - too bad about that expressway out front, though. Some of the rooms have fireplaces and jacuzzis, and many contain interesting touches (such as rough-looking exposed-brick walls and dark rafters set in white plaster ceilings) which clash pleasantly with conventional, often floral, wallpaper. Aside from these moments of interest, the rooms are ultimately pretty typical. Ask for something on the top floor, as this provides the best possible view and the greatest distance from the interstate. The hotel contains the impressive and popular Il Bar, which offers 120 wines by the glass thanks to a specially designed wine preservation and dispensing system - the largest in the world.

Author Tip

On the eastern edge of Old City, the hotel is well positioned near many of Philadelphia's most popular sites, such as Independence Hall and Elfreth's Alley. At night, 2nd Street south of Market Street becomes overrun with hoards of clubbers -- the Continental is a good place to observe the action while eating dumplings and lobster mashed potatoes.
