Blue velvet headboards and gold-and-blue stripe silk draperies create a tufted jewel box feel at this gem of a boutique hotel. Renowned Chicago architect Daniel Burnham helped design the 1895 Reliance office building, precedent for the modern skyscraper, that contains this uber-cool decor.

She's a looker alright, with 16 stories of shimmering glass framed by brilliant white terra cotta details outside, and mosaic floors and marble-clad ceilings and walls inside. Some rooms still bear the original wood-and-glass doors from the building's early days, complete with a beautiful old brass key to open them. (Architecture buffs should download the full mp3 history tour from the web.) Rooms are lavishly furnished with mahogany writing desks, chaise lounges, granite counter-tops and Aveda bath products. There's free wi-fi in public areas, DSL in rooms, and a personal pack of yoga products so you can 'om away from home'. The hotel offers a complimentary wine reception every night, and the in-house Atwood Café is a worthwhile destination in its own right. The proprietors brag that the Burnham has the highest guest return rates in Chicago; it's easy to see why.
