Directly opposite Union Station, the Royal York's mock-chateau style adds unexpected panache to Toronto's uniform skyline. Here, in 1929, the Canadian Pacific Railway realised their dream of constructing the grandest hotel in the Commonwealth.

At the end of the 1920s, the height - 28 stories - was a structural feat, and the rooms, equipped with radios and showers, yielded a mechanical genius previously unknown in Canada. Today, with old-fashioned charm intact, rooms are decked out in antique reproductions and ruffled pillowcases, and bathed in a palette of rose, burgundy, mint green and gold. Convenient check-in/out computer kiosks blend surprisingly well with the old world elegance of the lobby and its ornate ceiling. Guests have free access to the indoor pool, whirlpool, saunas and fitness centre on site, or the racquet and aerobic facilities at the nearby Wellington Club. A myriad of restaurants range from traditional French to a Japanese steak house, where chefs perform dazzling culinary feats right at your table.
