Possibly DC's most character-filled hotel, the Tabard Inn is creaky like an old ship. The warren of rooms on the main floor reek of generations of wood fires in the fireplace. The rooms are equally atmospheric and contain a mixture of the old and new. Oddball touches are everywhere, from buddhas to old ship artefacts to a carved bust of a fireman from 1861.

Named for the inn in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, this delightful, historic hotel is set in a trio of Victorian-era row houses. Its 40 rooms are furnished with vintage quirks like iron bedsteads, overstuffed flowery sofas and wing-backed armchairs. Some share bathrooms, others have private facilities. It's worth taking the website tour as no two are alike. Downstairs, the wood-panelled bar and parlour are filled with funky old furniture and are highly conducive to curling up with a vintage port and the Sunday Post. The restaurant has a good menu that combines American and Italian dishes - if it's on the menu order the gnocchi. If weather allows, dine outside on the lovely patio under the flowing shelter of a parachute. If you like waking up in a generic room that could be in Omaha, this place is not for you.
