The hidden cul-de-sacs of the Innere Stadt are full of surprises, and Grashofgasse is no exception. Here you'll find the demure Kärntnerhof, a very central-yet-quiet hotel run by straight-forward staff with a knack for good service.

The five floors of the hotel's dull yellow facade are punctured with large double windows, allowing front rooms to bask in their fair share of natural sunlight. The rooms themselves come in two styles, and price matches quality. The renovated variety have lightly-painted walls, matching pseudo-antique beds, chairs and tables, and chandeliers hanging from high ceilings, while older rooms are smaller and more stuffy, with dark shades and outdated furniture pieces. The lift, an old, rickety art piece which looks as though it pre-dates WWI, slowly rises to the roof, where you'll find two terraces; while a tad scrubby, they catch plenty of sunrays and have partial views of neighbouring rooftops from laid-out deck chairs. Sidling up to the hotel's western flank is its restaurant, serving hearty Viennese fare.
