Live the charmed existence of a Venetian painter in the heart of arty Dorsoduro. In this quiet canalside spot between the Accademia and Campo Santa Margarita, you can always stop in for a nap and a sketch between museum-hopping and happy hour.

Artists can finally stop suffering for their art at Locanda Montin, where sleepless nights are highly unlikely in the tranquil rooms facing the garden. After a proper feast in the restaurant here, not-so-starving artists can head right up the back stairway and pass through the art salon to their guestrooms. Even Modigliani couldn't pull a long face in 2nd-floor rooms 5 and 8, where balconies overlooking the canal keep the inspiration coming. Original art in all rooms are the focus of the highly eclectic decor - works by D'Annunzio grace the walls of No 12, with 19th-century wooden furniture to match the art. But even with all the art on the walls here, only 10% of the family's art collection is on display. An American painter named Congdon once paid for his meals with paintings in the 1950s, and grateful artists have given the owners a enough sketches to fill a palazzo.
