Tucked away along a narrow canal is this palace retreat, where couples, families, and groups on a budget can bunk in under original 18th-century Bevilacqua frescoes.

This sprawling mansion owned by the Waldensian church dates from the 13th century, when it was owned by the Morosoni family, who gave Venice four dogi (dukes). On the 1st floor the rooms are adorned with 18th-century frescoes by Bevilacqua, and the cultural centre housed in the old ballroom hosts concerts and conferences year-round. One floor (but lots of stairs) up there may not be frescoes, but the views of the canal are wonderful and all the rooms have private bathrooms. The large breakfast room is up here too. Rooms come in a bewildering array of sizes ranging from doubles to dorms, some with private bathrooms and others with shared facilities. Dorm room beds are available only for families or groups, with one locker and chair per person.
