If you're not staying at the Cipriani there are only two real reasons for picking the island of Giudecca: the views of San Marco, Dorsoduro and the Salute Church are stunning, and the beds at this hostel are the cheapest in the city.Although locals claim that Giudecca is on the up, and even though Elton John owns a pad near the Redentore Church, there's something slightly sad about Giudecca, probably because it lacks the appealing nooks and crannies of Venice proper and there just doesn't seem to be much going on. That said, with the price of Venetian accommodation not particularly wallet-friendly, this hostel is worth seeking out. It's for members of Hostelling International only, but you can buy a card here. Housed in a vast building that used to store cereal, a three-course dinner is served in the cavernous communal area with its high-beamed ceiling. There's a laundrette, lockers for valuables, and a bar. If you're canny you'll request a bed with a view of Venice. To get into the city it's a short hop on the vaporetto across the Canale delle Giudecca.
