Serene canal views make your hostel bunk seem miles away from the mad crowds and inflated prices of Piazza San Marco, yet it's just a 10-minute ferry ride away. With 82 berths, this isn't the most intimate spot in Venice - but you can't argue with the price, or the location on Giudecca's waterfront with million-euro views.

Factor a vaporetto (ferry) pass into your lodging cost and this former grain warehouse is still one of the cheapest places to stay in Venice, and it's on the coolest stretch of waterfront in town. Giudecca is dotted with indie art galleries, theatres in old brick factories, and hole-in-the-wall osterie and cafes frequented by musicians and gondola builders. As with most hostels, this one has rules galore: breakfast is 07:00-09:30; guests must vacate the premises between 09:30 and 13:30 while the place is scrubbed top to bottom; and anyone who returns after 01:30 is locked out until staff arrive at 05:30. You'll need to arrive promptly after the 13:30 opening time to claim that perfect bunk by the window with a new mattress and views across the water. Families and canoodling couples might consider reserving one of the two private rooms in advance.
