Lonely Planet review

This bright yellow Victorian B&B, on a leafy street in the heart of the West End, is big on details. Its large gourmet breakfast will give you all the strength you need to make it to the secluded veranda for a day of watching the world go by.

Monogrammed robes, jazzy contemporary furnishings and in-room CD players, with their own library of top Canadian artists from Diana Krall to Jann Arden: the immaculate Barclay House is a heritage B&B that fuses antique trimmings with sumptuous modern flourishes (check out those Philippe Starck chairs), while striving to go the extra mile for its creature-comfort-loving clientele. The six rooms - four with claw-foot bathtubs - are elegant and refined and include Egyptian bed linens, DVD players and personal fridges. In-room spa treatments are also available and there's a concierge folder in every room that includes the innkeeper's eclectic reviews of local restaurants, plus a constantly updated calendar of local events. Free parking and wi-fi is also part of the mix.
