A cheerful, tidy heritage property next door to Stanley Park, the Buchan may lack an elevator but it has bags of charm. Its ski and bike storage facilities also make this an ideal stopover for sports enthusiasts.

Located on a surprisingly quiet leafy street near Stanley Park, the heritage-era Buchan hotel houses a warren of comfortable, mostly basic rooms that attract visitors looking for some kind of bang for their budget-travelling buck. Along corridors lined with monochrome prints of yesteryear Vancouver, the cheaper rooms - many with shared bathrooms - are clean and cosy, although some contain dingy furnishings and older blankets. The pricier rooms are correspondingly prettier and the east-side rooms are a bit brighter. The front-desk staff are excellent, however, and happy to help plan your day out with maps, coupons and suggestions for top local attractions. The highly affordable Buchan - there are some excellent deals off-season - also provides laundry facilities to its guests.
