Victoria Court is a sweetly run guesthouse filling a pair of three-storey 1881 brick terraces with 22 en suite rooms, all with TVs and over-the-top Victoriana (floral quilts, four-poster beds, chandeliers, paintings of fruit etc). Still, it's clean, secure and far enough from Kings Cross to be called Potts Point.

Some skirting boards and corners here display evidence of mild wear and tear, and the naff collection of straw hats and bonnets at the entrance place it firmly in 'travelling spinster' territory, but we're still impressed by the standard of the rooms and the rare serving of posh on this cram-'em-in backpacker-laden strip. There's also a leafy courtyard and one minuscule budget room without bathroom. Reservations are advised, and don't expect to get much joy if you're looking for a place to park your car. Instead, don't bring one at all - this place enjoys a great central location for both city and eastern beaches sightseeing schedules. Rates include breakfast.
