There are three basic reasons people stay in places like this: 1 Location; 2 Price; 3 Other backpackers. And Auckland Central Backpackers scores a bull's-eye on all counts. If you don't like a hive of activity, then you'll need to go elsewhere, as this place hums with questions about where the cheapest places to eat can be found, who's got work where and whether bungy jumping's worth it.

With over 500 beds (and these are often full) and a veritable network of sightseeing and job-seeking contacts at one's fingertips, this place is where many young visitors to Auckland get their bearings. It's a fresh, youthful centre of exploration with jammed dorm rooms (of varying odours but generally all pretty clean), sometimes poor ventilation, cramped private rooms and bustling communal areas. Various deals are available and some constitute excellent value - but one thing's for sure, you're not paying for space, you're paying to share it with other like-minded young souls.
