Lonely Planet Review

Located on a steep street a stone's throw from one of Auckland's most intriguing old parks, the Aspen has had a face-lift in recent times. Despite its centrality and bargain prices, the place is relatively quiet. It's far from a party place - more a wise choice for those with an eye for a good deal and equally good design. And in a lovely touch, it's not just the exterior that's had some work done. An additional 29 rooms have been created under the name 'Aspen Lodge' (right next door) and the original 27 rooms have had a thorough overhaul. A spacious, blood-red lobby dotted with comfy modern chairs and the odd Pacific artwork invites socialising, and the helpful staff have a stack of information about the city and its sights at their fingertips. The rooms themselves, while sometimes on the small side, are smartly kitted out with fashionable furnishings (more blood-red paint on the walls, new checked bedspreads, crisp white sheets and groovy light fittings) and sparkling, shiny bathrooms.
