Lonely Planet Review

One of the city's true bargain finds, this hostel has charm and character to spare, plus a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere that proves irresistible to many budget travellers. A relaxed and cheery hideaway - one of the few originals left. The house itself is set amidst verdant, casually maintained gardens and has a holiday house ethos that's missing from so many hostels today. With good solid bones, generous proportions and a warm welcome, you'll regret not bringing your guitar once you spy the simple veranda with hammock. None of the rooms are particularly flash, but they all have high ceilings and good quality (if frequently used) furnishings. Female travellers who wish to keep things girly can stay in a femme-only dorm room (which avoids that dorm odour that male travellers seem to traipse in with them). Communal areas are simple and a little worn, but certainly suffice - there's a reasonable kitchen, tidy showers and bathrooms (one of which overlooks Neil Finn's yard) and a TV-free lounge. And if you need even more of a hand chilling out, you can't beat the yoga tent on the front lawn.
