After 15 years of stable management, the Abaco finally decided to keep up with its trendy surrounds on Jervois Rd and get with the program, and the result is very good. Our pick for the best room of the lot is number 810 - the water glimpses in the late afternoon are pretty nice.Jervois Rd runs just off Auckland's most fashionable strip, Ponsonby Rd, and keeps up with its neighbour by having its own grab bag of groovy cafes, gourmet eateries, chichi hairdressing salons and smart clothes shops. That makes the Abaco one of the city's best-situated motel-style sleeping options. Taking advantage of their good proportions, the studios and apartments have access to balconies, let in the natural light, and come with spa baths. The colour scheme is that omnipresent shade of 'greige' that mixes so well with feature walls and dark wood. Kitchenettes are swanky indeed, with gleaming stainless steel minibars, although the rule against 'odoriferous cooking' (and the easy access to dozens of neighbourhood restaurants) might have you ignoring this impressive extra.
