This old, well-positioned Cairo favourite is fast approaching the wrong side of faded, but still has enough charm to make it a recommendation. Most of the friendly staff have worked here forever, and we have a sneaking suspicion that the mattresses are just as old.

Best not to pay too much attention to the crumbling arcade of this Art Deco building when taking the lift of this old Cairo hotel, or you'll head straight back out again! But once inside the place there are enough glimpses of what the hotel once was. The rooms are very clean, but very basic, and the single beds are very narrow and rather concave. The Polo Bar has some very funky chairs lining its corridor-like interior and there's a fine balcony with fascinating views - a good evening drinking spot. In the TV room (an in-room TV costs extra) guests watch football together. Everyone is treated like family in this friendly hotel.
