Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Cairo's oldest five-star hotel is still a fine place to stay courtesy of its central city location on Midan Tahrir, next to the Egyptian Museum. Despite efforts to attract a younger crowd with a new bar and nightclub, it could still do with some freshening up.

While it's hard to fault the location, it's difficult not to assume that this Hilton is trading on past glories. Apart from the fantastic mural with Egyptian motifs behind reception, everything else is very dated in terms of decor. On the plus side, there are extensive facilities and shops (including a branch of the excellent Nomad handicrafts), a good bookshop, Amex, ATMs, souvenir stores and an adjoining shopping centre. All rooms have balconies and interesting views (Nile views are best), but the only hint of the 21st century is the fact the rooms have wi-fi. The oriental terrace by the garden is a nice spot for a cold beer or sheesha (tobacco smoked through a water pipe) after a day's sightseeing and if they made the rooms as hip as their new Latex nightclub or Kaab Aaly open-air lounge, this could once again be the best address in Cairo.

How To Get There

Black and white taxis are available from the airport to central Cairo. They leave from outside the Arrivals hall, and will cost around USD 12 to the hotel. The hotel can arrange transport with 48 hours prior notice. An airport bus service operates from Terminal 1 (Old Airport). Bus service 400 leaves approximately every 30 minutes during the day and every hour at night. The inexpensive metro system is one of the best ways to explore Cairo. Buses and minibuses are still the most common form of transport for Cairenes, although taxis are a better option for visitors. Boats depart frequently for University, a landing over on the Giza side of the river. Every second boat continues south to Manial, Rhoda, Giza and Masr al- Qadima (old Cairo).
Driving directions: From the airport, follow Oroba Street to the end and then take the flyover (6th of October Bridge). After the bridge, exit into Tahrir Square.

Author Tip

The hotel is wonderfully positioned, so you can ignore the taxi-touts and take an atmospheric walk around the bustling Downtown or a stroll along the Corniche, not to mention pop across to the Egyptian Museum, although the traffic can be a problem. Latex nightclub and the Kaab Aaly lounge are fast becoming Cairo favourites.
