Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This monolithic, modern Hilton is well-positioned just north of the Egyptian Museum, but you'll still be taking taxis everywhere because it's surrounded by flyovers and some of Cairo's most perilous roads.

On our last visit to this quite bland Hilton, the hotel lobby was filled with the unmistakable scent of apple sheesha (tobacco smoked through a water pipe) wafting over from the lobby coffee shop. While this is not unusual in Cairo, We were surprised to find the sheesha-lovers were a group of Saudi women, slipping the sheesha pipe under their veils! And really, this is wild stuff for a hotel where the belly dancer comes on at 23:00, an hour when most dancers are just getting out of bed. Still, all the usual amenities are on offer: the more than 850 rooms are regulation old-school Hilton, amenities are as you'd expect and there are great views from most of the rooms. The swimming pool also offers you views of the Nile. There's a decent bookshop and newsstand as well as some rather tacky souvenir shops.

How To Get There

Black and white taxis are available from the airport to central Cairo. They leave from outside the Arrivals hall, and will cost around 11 USD to the hotel. An airport bus service operates from Terminal 1 (Old Airport). Bus service 400 leaves approximately every 30 minutes during the day and every hour at night. The inexpensive metro system is one of the best ways to explore Cairo. Buses and minibuses are still the most common form of transport for Cairenes, although taxis are a better option for visitors. Boats depart frequently for University, a landing over on the Giza side of the river. Every second boat continues south to Manial, Rhoda, Giza and Masr al- Qadima (old Cairo).
Driving directions: From the airport take Ouruba Road, then Salah Salem Road. Drive up the Sixth of October Bridge to Abdel Moneim Riad Square, where the hotel is located.

Author Tip

Once you decide to negotiate the horrendous traffic, you'll find the must-see Egyptian Museum is only several death-defying street crossings away. The rest of the Downtown area is just as accessible on foot. For more atmospheric eateries you can head down to the Semiramis, although you still should check out the hotel's 36th-floor Windows on the World bar for a cocktail.
