For a low-key place away from the hustle and bustle that is modern-day Delhi, the Maharani Guest House is one of a clutch of medium-sized hotels found in the upmarket suburb of Sunder Nagar. The Maharani has a small rooftop terrace area and although there's no restaurant on the premises, room service is available. This unruffled 24-room hotel (it doesn't really feel intimate enough to be classified as a guesthouse, despite its name) is fronted by a small garden and offers clean, well-appointed rooms. Other than being a bit boxed-in, the rooms are reasonable, though the higher floor rooms - reached via an exceptionally clunky elevator - are far lighter and airier than the claustrophobic subterranean options. Though the atmosphere is a little soulless, the staff is efficient and the rooms well-appointed enough to make for a quiet, comfortable stay.

Browse through the interesting shops of the nearby Sunder Nagar Market, most of which specialise in Indian and Nepali artefacts. There are also two excellent tea shops in this market that sell a sensational assortment of well-packed teas: the Regalia Tea House and right next door to this, the Mittal Tea House. Both offer complimentary tea tastings.
