Rather redolent of a vanishing era in its ageing feel and slow-moving staff, the Chinese-managed Hademen is handily located right by the underground station, with Beijing train station just one stop away.

The Hademen was set up for the foreign tourist trade, and sees a fair number of Western travellers pass through. Many have an early train to catch (the station is only 500m away), but others are also satisfied with the value the hotel offers. It's a bed and shower in a central part of town and budget eateries abound. The main Foreign Legation quarter is just to the west, where some of the bloodiest moments of the Boxer Rebellion took place. Strolling here turns up many unexpected surprises.
