Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A traditional riad (courtyard mansion) lovingly restored to retain all its quirky features, including tiny doors that could lead to Wonderland, and narrow winding staircases. Beautifully whitewashed with lilac trim and green-tiled fountains, Dar Soukaina is a tranquil haven in a hectic city.

This cosy riad has been renovated with a light touch - no heavy styling here, just spare whitewashed walls, smooth tadelakt (polished plaster) floors and nubby-textured natural fabrics. The lack of extraneous detail may seem extreme but it's actually smart, since the five high-ceilinged rooms are quite narrow and clutter-free aesthetic makes them seem more spacious. Little details like the pointy Islamic arches also help to lift it above the ordinary. A new extension across the street is a bit more spacious and sumptuously kitted out in handsome dark woods and plush fabrics. Omar keeps the house running like clockwork and usually appears at breakfast or in the evening to see how you're getting along - he's a mine of local information and speaks English and French, so make sure you pick his brain.

How To Get There

Ask a little taxi to lead you to the Square of Riad Laarouss, inside the medina. Once in front of the pharmacy Populaire, the only pharmacie on the square, call us at 024 37 60 55, it will not take us more than 3 minutes to come and meet you on the square, and escort you to the guest house.

Author Tip

The northern Medina is mostly residential, except for green tile-topped zaouias (saints' shrines) that draw the faithful in the hopes of gaining baraka (blessings). Zaouias and mosques are only open to Muslims in Marrakesh, but they make a striking skyline. The Nouvelle Ville and Djemaa el-Fna are both far from here; the handiest eateries are in the central souqs.
