An extremely well-run, well-maintained hostel, the Saga still impresses with its dependably clean rooms and common areas, its community spirit, excellent staff, and fantastic location down an historic hútòng. Both the dorm and the very affordable private rooms are recommended.

Parked down one of Beijing's most historic hútòng (narrow alley), the Saga has a winning formula despite its modern, multi-storey block-like appearance. But the height has its advantages: head up to the huge open rooftop common area and look directly below onto a Qing dynasty courtyard. Western guests (the bulk of the clientele) will ease into its mood and it's a good place to make new friends. Mixed dorm rooms are a decent size and include private lockers. Doubles and triples have wood floors and TVs, and if they don't have a private bath, they share with only one other room. For more character and charm, there are three small courtyard rooms at the rear. Laundry service, kitchen facilities, small restaurant, common room snack stand, bike rental, internet and tour bookings round out the hostel amenities. Cheap local restaurants abound.
