'Good hotel in a great location at a reasonable price' is how most occupants describe the Hotel Catedral, and travelers looking for a bit more comfort in the Historic Center will not be disappointed. Though short on colonial charm, everything here looks new and smells fresh.Unlike many Mexican lodgings whose builders seem to take perverse delight in obstructing all views of a splendid setting, the Catedral has clearly considered the value of its location, directly behind the Metropolitan Cathedral. South-facing rooms offer reach-out-and-touch views of the colonial masterpiece while those on the north side take in stately Calle Donceles. Even if you get an interior room, you can lounge on the rooftop terraces, with impressive cityscapes. Additional thoughtful touches include quiet ceiling fans, potable water spigots and strategically placed headboard switches. Mauve-coated bellhops who could have stepped out of a Jack Lemmon comedy from the '60s display a welcome sense of humour and willingness to please, and the above-average restaurant serves abundant breakfasts à la mexicana. The only drawback is that this non-residential area turns unsavoury after dark.

Past a string of photo shops along Calle Donceles, you'll find the Templo Mayor complex, remnants of Tenochtitlán's nerve center that were dug up during excavations in the '70s. Visit the superb museum here, then head east to the old Jesuit college of San Ildefonso, which hosts fascinating historical exhibits. Evenings, see what's going on at the Spanish Cultural Centre (República de Guatemala).
