Lonely Planet Review

Not technically a hostel, the Quaker-run Casa is primarily a residence for NGOs, researchers and others seeking social change (though half the guests are walk-in travelers). Not surprisingly, it generally attracts a more serious type of individual than the average hostel and thus has a lower-key atmosphere.Accommodation is modest but quite acceptable. There are two dorms and 12 private rooms, plus a well-equipped kitchen. A common lounge has sofas, games and a bulletin board with posted opportunities. A hearty breakfast can be purchased Monday to Friday in the ground-floor dining room. There's a two-night minimum stay and guests are asked to refrain from smoking or drinking. The Quakers maintain a library upstairs with books on social and peace issues. Meditation sessions, discussions with community members and Spanish conversation are among the activities available to guests, who may volunteer to help run the Casa for a reduced rate. The real advantage of staying here is the chance to connect with socially aware travelers and perhaps to get involved yourself. Those seeking to, say, work with street kids or teach English in a prison will find this an excellent source of info.
