Lonely Planet Review
This elegant ryokan has been favoured by celebrities from around the world for decades. Facilities and services are impeccable, as you would expect. If you want to sample a top-flight Japanese lodging, this is a superb choice.
Everything is pure Japanese at this ryokan, including its building. This ryokan was built more than 150 years ago, and you'll feel special as soon as you enter the stunning entrance. All rooms have Japanese tatami-mats and are surprisingly spacious. The sumptuous bathtubs are made of hinoki (cypress), a wood famous in Japan for its silky-smooth contours. Employees speak only a little English but they epitomise the best of Japanese grace and hospitality. Even though it is located right on Oike-dori, in the heart of Kyoto's downtown, privacy and comfort are ensured within the walls of the Hiiragiya. In fact, you're likely to be surprised just how quiet the rooms are. The icing on the cake here is the exquisite food, which completes the whole mouth-watering experience.
