Tawaraya has been operating for over three centuries and is classed as one of the finest places to stay in the world. Guests at this ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) have included the imperial family and overseas royalty. It is a classic in every sense. Reservations are essential, preferably many months ahead.

As soon as you enter, you'll feel the peace and stillness that pervades everything at this impossibly refined Japanese ryokan. Everything is spotlessly clean and tastefully designed. The service is, of course, as good as you'll find anywhere. All the rooms are traditional tatami-mat rooms, with simple but tasteful decorations. The downtown location is a huge plus, and the specially designed futons will put you off Western-style beds for life. The food is wonderful. And, best of all, you can brag that you stayed in the same place as Alfred Hitchcock, Marlon Brando, Leonard Berstein...the list goes on. For those who want to try a Japanese ryokan, the Tawaraya is the ultimate.
