Hostels don't come much more central than Hostal Acapulco, but the usual drawbacks - all-day and all-night noise - are not a problem as all rooms have gloriously thick and hermetically sealed double-glazed windows. The rooms are excellent and a cut above many hostels in Madrid, with marble floors, recently renovated bathrooms and comfortable beds. All the bathrooms have bathtubs - ideal for soaking weary bodies after exploring Madrid's deceptively hilly streets. Street-facing rooms have balconies overlooking a sunny plaza and are flooded with natural light. All rooms are super-clean and spacious - this is not one of those places where you're expected to cram into small spaces just because you're not paying high prices. Staff are also friendly and more than happy to help you plan your Madrid day, and there are few better locations in town - you're close to the Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía and within a short stroll from a multitude of metro lines.

A couple of blocks from the hostel is El Sol, a soulful place to end your night with concerts - plenty of funk and soul music with the occasional nod to rock. If you're here midweek, the experience is decidedly mellow, but after midnight on a Friday or Saturday night you'll discover why Madrid is known as the party capital of Europe.
