It's only a couple of minutes from Ð De Tham and the heart of the Pham Ngu Lao backpacking area, but the Giang Son's position in a quiet alley feels much further away. And if you like the location, you'll love the prices.

The 14 rooms are quite simple but attractive enough, with those at the front being the best. They are spacious, with a double and a single bed and windows that let in plenty of light and afford rooftop views that include one of the few red-tiled A-frame roofs left in the area. And being in a lane it's pretty quiet. But while most rooms are relatively large and have soft beds and attractive, spacious bathrooms, the single rooms are small and dark with a small window. Whatever you think of the rooms, it's the attention to detail that is most inviting. When we visited - on a very hot day - cold water, napkins and deftly directed fans were forthcoming without us asking. Breakfast and Internet are included in the price. Put simply, the family who runs the Giang Son are very kind people.
