Something about coming out of one of these brownstones and strolling onto the Beacon Street sidewalk makes you feel as if you own the place - the building, the tree-lined street, the whole dang town. Tastefully ornate details and high-ceiling rooms complete the fantasy, all at a super affordable price.

Upper rooms separate you nicely from the street or quieter back alley, and offer a treetop-filtered view of the neighbourhood. If you've ever fantasised about living in Boston, this place will make you feel like Old Money...OK, maybe thrice removed Old Money. But the circa 1880 building retains some highfalutin architectural frolics - like a gorgeous spiral staircase, painted wrought-iron filigrees and impossibly high ceilings and windows in each room. Slender bathrooms bring you back down to earth, and some rooms share facilities. Rooms vary considerably in size, but all have cable TV and phone. Limited low-cost parking shaves some greenbacks off the cost of city living, and an in-room microwave, fridge and sink stretches the budget further. After all, you'll be flinging some around in the area's shops, restaurants and trendy martini bars.
