Housed in one of Montreal's most ornate Victorian buildings, this polished boutique hotel is so refined it almost hurts. Find a moment of relaxation in the library, where classical music wafts through the air and the lights from the chandeliers dance on the walls.

Three years renovation went into this careful mosaic of contrasting styles. Against all odds, everything fits: the Greek columns with oriental wall blossoms, the Italian Renaissance mouldings with the stuffed English antique chairs. It's an interior designer's fantasy come true. Although slightly removed from Old Montreal, the road in front of Hôtel le St James leads to all the main sights and if you don't like walking, hop aboard a horse-drawn carriage. The restaurant oozes sophistication, and the menu includes Lobster Bisque (36.00) and seabass with truffle juice (39.00). The staff love to dote on guests, so don't be afraid to ask for anything your little heart desires.
