Nothing in the city comes close to providing what this place does at these prices. A backpacker lodge that's all grown up, offering efficiency, cleanliness, comfort and the best view of the Johannesburg skyline you'll find anywhere.

The astonishing view notwithstanding, it's hard to think of any budget traveller's wish that could not be met in this series of former family homes whose low ceilings, thick walls and wooden floors offer a respite from the year-round glare and summer swelter. There's every facility you'd expect from a hostel and plenty you wouldn't, including off-street parking, a sauna, jacuzzi and basic gym. The many outbuildings, corridors and private gardens allow you to meet interesting people or get lost and keep it that way. There's little more one need say about a place that tries so hard to keep its guests happy and hits the bull's-eye with such alacrity; nowhere else will you feel as much like you're in Joburg as at Diamond Diggers. Oh, and did we mention the view?
