Lonely Planet review

In a sleazy, yet safe, strip of Rue Ste Catherine, adorned with red neon and XXX signs, this budget hotel is one of the best deals going. Smack dab in the middle of everything, L'Abri de Voyageur sits modestly at the crossroads of Ste Catherine and St Laurent, within walking distance to the Plateau du Mont Royal, Quartier Latin, Chinatown and Downtown.

Rooms have sinks but no bathrooms, although the shared facilities - a series of spacious lockable rooms - grant more privacy than most hotels. Each room has a TV, air-con and subtle decor: pine floors and bare brick walls adorned with pleasant artwork. The recently constructed new wing added a chunk of furnished studios to the repertoire, all of which contain a handy kitchenette and private bathroom. For those relying on public transportation, the airport shuttle stops in front and St Laurent metro is less than a block away. Parking is 10.00 per day and children under 12 stay for free in their parents' bedroom. The front desk is always open and provides a wealth of visitor information.
