A recent makeover has propelled this longtime standby (originally an apartment complex) out of the budget category. Redone rooms feature stylish earth-toned furniture, feather duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic on request). Staff is welcoming and thoughtful, especially on special occasions.

All 43 modern rooms have clean lines, surprisingly plush furnishings, DVD players (with a DVD lending library) and more space than you'd expect. Families will also find much to like about the full-kitchen suites, which sleep up to six people. Start your day of Hollywood sightseeing with fresh croissants and gourmet coffee on your glass-enclosed balcony (in some rooms) or by the petite 24-hour courtyard pool, where popsicles and bottled water are available. Or help yourself to drinks and snacks from the free community 'minibar' by the front desk. Parking here is half the price of other hotels in the neighborhood. Staying overnight also gives you access (for 25) to the Magic Castle, the fabled private magic club in a Victorian mansion next door - go for dinner and a show, or Sunday brunch.
