This convivial hostel puts the 'mod' in modern. The bold retro decor and its location near LA's epicentre of youthful hipness make it a standout. All rooms have a private bathroom; some of the good-sized private rooms even have balconies.

The Banana Bungalow has given up its worn-out Hollywood Hills hostel and moved down to Melrose Ave into the former Orbit Hotel. (Note that keeping 'Hollywood' in the hostel name is a bit deceptive). Carpeted, co-ed dorm rooms sleep six in full-size beds and have lockers, while decent private rooms come with TV. High-speed Internet, self-service laundry, free luggage storage and limited LAX shuttle services are available. Hook up with other travellers in the satellite TV and movie lounge, the cafe or an outdoor courtyard patio perfect for striking up conversations (not to mention feasting on Sunday night barbecues). Self-caterers, though, will only find a microwave to work with. Enquire about discounted tours to major attractions, including Universal Studios, Disneyland and LA nightclubs. Free underground parking is a bonus.
