Housed in Chiang Mai University's busy International Centre, this five-storey building offers 88 fairly clean rooms with an ageing 1980s aesthetic. It isn't the height of fashion but visiting students and study groups (both domestic and foreign) are happy to have an affordable home so close to the classroom.

The hostel at the CMU International Centre is a bit of a misnomer: the rooms are private hotel rooms not hostel dorms. Rooms are adequate but dated - smudged walls are a common decoration in this latitude. But the big windows look out over the rooftops of Chiang Mai, a view that would cost much more in this relatively expensive part of town. Most of the staff are CMU students majoring in tourism so they're equal parts enthusiastic and shy, another common, but endearing, feature in these parts. Room rates include breakfast, and monthly rates are available. The ground floor has a well-known Thai restaurant that will complete your conversion into a Thailand devotee. The attached Doi Wawi coffeeshop specialises in espresso drinks made with coffee grown in northern Thailand.
