Lonely Planet Review
Incense burns in the lobby and corridors. Chinese antiques appear in select spots. Inside your carpeted room, cherry-wood chairs and bed frames keep reminding you you're not in Kansas anymore. And that's why you stay here. Well, for that and the budget prices.
This hotel doesn't ooze style, but it has a little, and that is refreshing. That it comes at such a low price is outstanding. Or perhaps not, since the rooms in essence are nothing much despite the touches. Maybe you can imagine the place as a simple patio using wooden tables instead of plastic. The hotel address lists itself on Chengdu Rd, but the entrance is on Lane 76. The neighbourhood is an old one with quirky surprises here and there. It's a great place to check out youth culture in Taiwan, or paradoxically, the past in the remains of some fine old Japanese era buildings.

Author Tip
Check out nearby Red Pavilion Theatre for traditional performing arts. Fongda has some wickedly strong coffee and a soulful atmosphere. Longshan temple is photographer's dream. Wandering around youth-central Ximending always brings surprises.
