Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Independent with a loyal gay following, this small boutique hotel offers personable service and Art Deco-inspired rooms at modest rates. Management is kind enough to never jack up the prices, even in peak season.

Though the outside is a weird combination of brick walls accented with vinyl-sided bay windows, the rooms at this inn look and feel pretty good. The reasonably successful design intent was to model the rooms in a pseudo-Art Deco fashion, 'reflecting the great cruise ships of the '40s'. Like many hotels, they did a better job in the lobby and breakfast room - a space that boasts dark wood, a fireplace and some stained glass windows. Though less impressive, the character of the Alexander Inn's small rooms still beat the blander fare offered elsewhere. The hotel, because of its helpful, accepting staff and great location near Philly's gay neighbourhood, this hotel attracts lots of same-sex couples. There's no parking lot, but they have a discount arrangement with a garage three blocks north of the hotel.

Author Tip

This hotel sits in the midst of Philly's small gay district, with easy access to clubs such as Bump and Woody's. During the day, check out the old junk for sale along antique row, or just wander around the network of narrow cobbled alleys that intersect with Camac Street.
