Profits of this Dutch-run guesthouse go towards providing local children from poor families with food, medical aid and after-school activities. The colonial house has a courtyard surrounded by an old-style balcony and spotless rooms with decent beds and heating. Tiled bathrooms have reliable hot water, too. The efficient staff speak several languages.Much of the Niños Unidos Peruanos foundation's funding relies on guests staying at its award-winning hotel. Although a few of the rooms are not much bigger than the bed they contain, all are impeccably clean and have thick wool blankets and portable space heaters. Noise from other guests, mostly independent travellers in their 30s and groups of middle-aged tourists, does echo throughout the 300-year-old building, but the atmosphere is still peaceful. Women and solo travellers will feel especially comfortable here. The courtyard cafe fixes large breakfasts (not included in the rates), offers a book exchange and lights a crackling fire on chilly nights. Ask about apartment rentals for longer stays.
