Address: Calle suecia 561, Plaza de armas , Cuzco , Peru
Hidden uphill from the main plaza, this guesthouse inhabits a maze-like building with some fantastic views of the mountains. It offers a warm, welcoming ambience, too. Ample rooms have private bathrooms, cable TV, heating and reliable hot water. Prices include continental breakfast and airport pick-up.As your taxi drives up a narrow, cobblestoned street to reach this guesthouse, you may want to brace yourself against the doorframe, but never fear: it's worth the extra effort to get here. Two blocks from the madness of Cuzco's main plaza, the Hostal Corihuasi feels like a world apart. The setting is serene, with stone patios and window seats that encourage long afternoons of quietly contemplating the panoramic vistas. Each good-sized room is outfitted in rustic style, with woven rugs, wool blankets and wooden furnishings. The most in-demand room is No 1, which has wraparound windows. The only drawbacks to this guesthouse are occasional street noise and, for those who haven't acclimatised, the physical exertion of walking uphill and navigating its multiple-level warren of rooms. Be sure to book in advance, as they're usually full. Secure luggage storage is available for trekkers.

If you've already acclimatised to Cuzco's high elevations, continue uphill on Calle Suecia. At the next corner, turn right and walk along a winding road past the Iglesia de San Cristóbal, then climb a steep stone staircase to the ruins of the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuamán. Every year on the winter solstice (June 24), the Inti Raymi festival of the sun is colourfully re-enacted.
