While the rest of the street preens itself into a classy corner of KL, Red Palm keeps things simple with a small spread of partitioned rooms, breezy open windows and a laissez-faire approach to check-out rules.

Red Palm's broad, couch-strewn entrance is indicative of what the pace is like at this hostel. There's a mountain of DVDs just to push the point home. Also at ground level is a communal kitchen, where guests can cook up their own Hokkien Mie, as well as help themselves to the complementary breakfast. Up the lustrous wood stairs are the rooms, with walls that don't reach all the way to the ceiling (the centralised air-con and a few fans keep things cool). Some artfully hung fabric creates a semblance of privacy. There are two single rooms: one at the back surrounded by breezy windows, and one in the attic (not as spooky as it sounds, and it has its own air-con). There might be a queue for the shower, but there are other amenities downstairs if you can't wait. Free luggage storage and a flexible check-out time are other perks of this easy-going spot.
