One of the first backpackers to open on this now busy strip, Red Palm remains one of best. It's run by the affable Sophie who keeps things simple with a small spread of partitioned rooms, breezy open windows and a laissez-faire approach to check-out rules.

Red Palm's broad, couch-strewn lounge is indicative of what the pace is like at this hostel. There's a mountain of DVDs just to push the point home. Also at ground level is a communal kitchen where guests can help themselves to the complimentary breakfast. Up the lustrous wood stairs are the rooms, with walls that don't reach all the way to the ceiling (the centralised air-con and a few fans keep things cool). Some artfully hung fabric creates a semblance of privacy. There are two single rooms: one at the back surrounded by breezy windows, and one in the attic (not as spooky as it sounds, and it has its own air-con). There might be a queue for the two showers but there are three separate toilets. Free luggage storage and a flexible check-out time are other perks of this easy-going spot.
